Jennifer Tee

(Arnhem, 1973)

Jennifer Tee’s practice is grounded in the relationship between nature, culture and historical memory. In her Tampan Tulips, pressed tulip petals are rearranged according to motifs drawn from tampan, ceremonial textiles from Sumatra traditionally used in rites of passage. Turtles, birds, trees, human figures and boats form compositions that function simultaneously as images, archives and symbolic spaces. Her work connects Indonesia’s cultural history with her family biography and with historical routes of trade and migration.
